Salo Toppo:
India is an agriculture-based country in which most people depend on agriculture. However, there are some people who do not consider agriculture as their source of livelihood, while others see agriculture as a business and are involved in it. Today’s generation of youth is increasingly involved in fruit farming, mushroom farming, fish farming, etc.
Many educated youths are returning to agriculture to start agriculture-based businesses.
Let us look at people who are not involved in agriculture. According to them, educational careers are important, and professions like doctors, engineers, professors, etc. are their sources of earning. Through this, we can see that in some cases agriculture is the main source of livelihood, while in some cases it is not.
If we want to start a business in agriculture, we need to use scientific research and have a large market for selling products. For this, we need many farmers, natural compost, specific demand, suitable and secure land, water resources, and initial funding.
Governments are also supporting farmers and youth through different national and international organizations.
Some national organizations include the Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC), the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), and the All India Progressive Farmers Alliance (AIPFA).
Some international organizations are: Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), etc.
Overall, farming is increasingly being viewed as a usable and respectable future by many young people, especially when it is combined with technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainable practices.
However, many young people still hesitate to choose farming because of challenges like unpredictable weather, fluctuating crop prices, limited land ownership, and financial risks. As a result, while interest in farming is growing, not all young people consider it their first career choice.
