Priyanka M:

I am a girl who came from a rural background, studied in a government school and completed my higher education and PUC from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. My family is a nuclear family with 6 people. Like other parents, my father also had many dreams about their children (my brother and me). But my brother dropped his studies after completing 10th, so my parents felt bad, and now all their hope is on me.

My parents didn’t let go of my brother’s hand. They took a loan from the bank and bought a taxi, and showed a path for his life. As a daughter, now I have so many things to fulfil. Luckily, I got a seat in Navodaya, so I completed my studies from 6–12 for free. As my parents had dreamt, I also had a dream of becoming a doctor (Vet), so I took science in my 11th and completed my 12th with good marks. Then I saw the struggle of my parents to repay the loan amount. And the thing is, my father lost his job due to the pandemic, so my parents were struggling to repay the loan amount. So I decided not to depend on my parents for my education.

Then I came to know about Azim Premji University.

I gave the exam and got qualified in it, and got a free seat at Azim Premji University. As a rural girl, I struggled to adjust to the college environment. My communication skills were terrible. In the beginning, I struggled a lot. But my friends and family encouraged me and supported me to improve my English and communication skills. Now I have improved comparatively.

One experience that I would like to share. I have got an internship in an  NGO called Khoj, Avam Janjagriti Samiti. So I need to travel to Mainpur, Chhattisgarh, from Karnataka. My parents were afraid to send me that far. But then I convinced them and started my journey by train. I was travelling with my friends. I faced the fear. I hope I will do my best in my first internship.

I am grateful to have a very supportive family and friends. I took a different path from my dream, but I will reach great heights on the path that I have chosen. I will solve all the problems that are in my family. I will make them feel proud of me. I will try my level best to keep them happy throughout my life.
