Dear Bapu, How Do I Guide the Youth Today?

Sunay Chandra:

Dear Bapu,

Though we have never met, and generations separate us, your views and ideology have been with me since my childhood. Today, I sat down to pen my thoughts in your remembrance. Today, as a teacher, I am confused about how to guide the young generation with your words and wisdom. Today, an unknown enemy of all, ‘smartphones’, has entered the lives of all, and it is in the hands of everyone, who is destroying themselves by getting addicted to it, using social media, and wasting their precious time. Who has a responsibility to shape the nation, then? It is becoming so difficult to cultivate the principles of truth and non-violence among the youth.

You always had a search for God and always said, ‘Truth is God’. You always used to carry the Bhagavad Gita along with you in your hands and regarded it as an “Eternal Mother”. Though you had the principle of Ahimsa, and the Gita is historically set on a battlefield, your message was clear: to fight against evil and the good within us. But we are suffering conflict at each phase, conflict not only within us, but also over who is right or wrong, who is more powerful, who is richer, who is more educated, who has more followers, who is superior, etc., etc.

And the most important battle is within relationships. Your message about cleansing the heart, purity of mind and intellect, having manual skills, the existence of God, and no distinction between Rama and Allah, because they all share the same destination of ultimate truth. Your fight against Western culture had a real meaning to me. Now, as I experience things in my surroundings, we are being attracted by Western culture, which is driven by vulgar materialism and a lack of spiritual morality.

Being a teacher, in my position in a school, with problems nearby, problems will be there, but your words make me stronger; your knowledge enlightens my heart; your bravery makes me fearless and gives me a fighting spirit to inspire others with your views and move alone on the right path, even if no one’s there. I will always keep hitting the youth with your ideology.

One day, they will surely understand and bring a change in society, and will help in shaping the future of our nation.

Also, a wish someday you return back in some other body (B.G. 6.43).
