Here, amidst the rhythmic pulse of daily life, the workers of this small town navigate through a maze of challenges, their lives intertwined with threads of perseverance and hardship.
Gossaigaon, nestled in the western part of Assam, shares its borders with West Bengal, embodying a rich tapestry of diversity with its mosaic of communities. Yet, beneath the scenic beauty and bustling markets, lies a reality fraught with obstacles for its labor force.
At the heart of their struggle is the absence of a prominent industrial presence, relegating them to the unorganized sector. Daily wage jobs, brick factories, farmlands, and sporadic construction projects form the backbone of their livelihoods. However, safety remains a luxury, with workers often toiling in hazardous conditions without adequate protection.
Lacking social and political rights, Gossaigaon’s workers find themselves trapped in a cycle of economic and educational deprivation. Many are forced to seek employment far from home, exposing their children to similar hardships and depriving them of educational opportunities. The specter of child labor looms large, with youngsters drawn into the workforce or falling prey to substance abuse.
Despite government schemes like MGNREGA promising a 100-day work guarantee, the reality falls short, with wages remaining dismally low. Women bear the brunt of this inequality, receiving lesser pay than their male counterparts and facing discrimination in the workplace. Their voices are stifled, with the absence of labor unions leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and harassment.
Migration becomes a harsh reality for many, driven by the lack of livelihood opportunities. Sacrificing their identities, they embark on uncertain journeys in search of survival, silently enduring the hardships along the way. Many workers have to go out for work, or a season, or for a time when their children are also exposed, they have little knowledge in the field of education, and they can not focus on education, as a result, the education rate of their children is very low, children in the non-construction sector are always there, they become child laborers and at one time they are involved in bad drugs. Thus, with the increase in child labor, the future of the children of the workers is being destroyed.
Within Gossaigaon’s social landscape, women workers face additional hurdles, grappling with gender disparities and economic marginalization. Despite their significant contributions to both home and field, their efforts often go unrecognized, perpetuating the cycle of inequality.
Yet, amidst the trials and tribulations, there are glimmers of hope. From dawn to dusk, the workers’ lives unfold like a visual odyssey, each moment a testament to their resilience in the face of adversity. Their silent determination resonates through the rough terrain of survival, painting a portrait of unwavering strength.

असम के गोसाईगाँव के सुरम्य नज़ारों के बीच, संघर्ष और मौजूदा दौर में प्रासंगिक बने रहने की कहानियों से बुनी एक कलमकारी भी मौजूद है। यहाँ, दैनिक जीवन की लयबद्ध गति के बीच, चुनौतियों के चक्रव्यूह से हर दिन गुज़रते इस छोटे से शहर के श्रमिकोण का जीवन, दृढ़ता और कठिनाई के धागों के बीच गुंथा हुआ है।
पश्चिमी असम में बसा गोसाईगाँव, पश्चिम बंगाल की सीमा से सटा हुआ है, जो विभिन्न समुदायों की अपनी पच्चीकारी के साथ विविधता भरी एक समृद्ध संस्कृति का प्रतीक है। फिर भी, नैसर्गिक सुंदरता और चहल-पहल से भरे बाज़ारों के अंदर बाधाओं भरी एक वास्तविकता छिपी है, जिसका सामना करने को यहाँ की श्रम शक्ति मजबूर है। औद्योगिक संस्थानों का अभाव इसके मूल में है, जो उन्हें असंगठित क्षेत्र की ओर धकेल देता है। दैनिक मज़दूरी वाले काम, ईंट भट्ठे, खेत मज़दूरी और छिटपुट निर्माण परियोजनाएँ उनकी आजीविका के मुख्य साधन हैं। हालाँकि, सुरक्षा एक दूर की कौड़ी ही बनी हुई है, और श्रमिक अक्सर पर्याप्त सुरक्षा साधाओं के बिना खतरनाक परिस्थितियों में काम करते हैं।
सामाजिक और राजनीतिक अधिकारों के अभाव में, गोसाईगाँव के मज़दूर खुद को आर्थिक और शैक्षणिक अभाव के चक्र में फंसा हुआ पाते हैं। कई लोगों को घर से दूर रोज़गार खोजने के लिए मजबूर किया जाता है, जिससे उनके बच्चों को कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ता है और उन्हें शैक्षिक अवसरों से वंचित होना पड़ता है। बाल श्रम का खतरा उन पर बहुत छोटी उम्र से ही मंडराता रहता है। ऐसे माहौल में युवा आज या तो श्रमशक्ति का हिस्सा बनते हैं या फिर मादक पदार्थों के सेवन का शिकार हो जाते हैं।
मनरेगा जैसी सरकारी योजनाओं में 100 दिन के काम की गारंटी का वादा करने के बावजूद, वास्तविकता उससे अलग है। मज़दूरी निराशाजनक रूप से कम है। इस असमानता का खामियाजा महिलाओं को और आधिक भुगतना पड़ता है, उन्हें अपने पुरुष समकक्षों की तुलना में कम वेतन मिलता है और कार्यस्थल में भेदभाव का सामना भी करना पड़ता है। श्रमिक संघों की अनुपस्थिति के कारण उनकी आवाज़ दबा दी जाती है, जिससे उनके शोषण और उत्पीड़न की संभावनाएं बहुत बढ़ जाती हैं।
आजीविका के अवसरों की कमी के कारण पलायन कई लोगों के लिए एक कठोर वास्तविकता बन जाता है। अपनी पहचान का त्याग करते हुए, वे अस्तित्व की तलाश में एक अनिश्चित यात्रा पर निकल पड़ते हैं और रास्ते में आने वाली कठिनाइयों को चुपचाप सहते रहते हैं। बहुत से श्रमिकों को काम के सिलसिले में साल के किसी खास समय में मौसमी प्रवास करना पड़ता है और ऐसे में अक्सर उनके बच्चों को भी माता-पिता के साथ पलायन कर बाहर जाना पड़ता है। उन्हें शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में बहुत कम जानकारी होती है, और वे बच्चों की शिक्षा पर ध्यान केंद्रित नहीं कर पाते हैं, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप उनकी शिक्षा दर में गिरावट आती है। उनके बच्चे बहुत कम पढ़े-लिखे हैं, और अधिकतर असंगठित क्षेत्र में मजदूरी करने के दुष्चक्र में फंसे रह जाते हैं, कई मामलों में वे बाल मज़दूर बन जाते हैं और धीरे-धीरे नशीले पदार्थों का भी प्रयोग करने लग जाते हैं। इस प्रकार बाल श्रम बढ़ने से श्रमिकों के बच्चों का भविष्य बर्बाद हो रहा है।
गोसाईगाँव के सामाजिक परिदृश्य में, महिला श्रमिकों को और कई बाधाओं का सामना करना पड़ता है, लैंगिक और आर्थिक असमानताओं से जूझना पड़ता है। घर और कार्यक्षेत्र दोनों में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान के बावजूद, उनके प्रयासों को अक्सर मान्यता नहीं मिलती है, जिससे असमानता का चक्र कायम रहता है।

आइए हम सब मिलकर एक ऐसे भविष्य की दिशा में काम करें जहाँ गोसाईगाँव और हर जगह के मजदूर के लिए सम्मान और अवसर, दूर के सपने नहीं बल्कि एक वास्तविक सच्चाई हो।
